Steel River Consultants - Will Taiwan meet its renewable energy target by 2025?

The Taiwan Government’s ambitious plans to produce 20% of its power from renewable energy by 2025 is attracting more international investment and commercial partnerships with UK firms. 

Its Government has been actively promoting the development of new energy, with a plan to reduce nuclear energy plants in five years. By then, PV project capacity will need to reach 20 GW, while offshore wind power should reach 5.5 GW.

Stockton-based health and safety expert, Steel River Consultants, who provide safety advice on worldwide projects within the industry, is hoping to tap into this emerging market. 

Kevin Strachan, Operations Director at Steel River Consultants, said: “Taiwan has stated that it wants 90% of its renewable energy to come from offshore wind, so it will be interesting to see if the target will be met.

“Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, plans to phase out nuclear power plants and have an energy mix containing 50% natural gas, 30% coal and 20% renewable energy.

“If the 20 GW PV target is to be achieved by 2025, it needs to expand domestic PV demand at a CAGR of 303% between now and the target. This means it must add 18 GW of new PV capacity.” (Kev, please check this information)

The Department for International Trade is planning a trip to Taiwan later this year with Steel River Consultants and several other businesses from the Tees Valley to meet with Taiwan-based construction and consultancy firms, to discuss knowledge, experience and services.
