‘Real Benefits’: Made smarter launched for another round as more firms urged to apply for grants and support

Manufacturers across our region are being urged to apply for the next phase of a programme offering more expert support and grant backing.

With access to support, tailored training and up to £20,000 in grant funding available, the Made Smarter Adoption North East programme is launching the next cohort of its transformational scheme for firms looking to adopt new digital tools and technology.

The project supports small and medium-sized manufacturers to grow through digitalisation.

And its new round of support is now open for fresh applications.

Delivered in Tees Valley by RTC North, the programme provides businesses with a structured journey to digital adoption, including a series of workshops to explore digital technologies, tailored support from sector experts and networking opportunities with other regional manufacturers.

Since launching, the Combined Authority has supported almost 100 SMEs through Made Smarter.

Now entering its fifth year, the aim is to recruit dozens more businesses to its next cohort starting this Autumn.

Redcar-based Elemy Group Limited, specialists in composite and metal fabrication, were part of the first cohort of Made Smarter programme – which helped the firm deliver a complete shift in its approach to business processes and productivity.

Managing Director Richard Brine said: “For us, taking part in Made Smarter was about much more than just accessing grant funding, it was about delivering a cultural change to improve productivity and efficiency through digital tools.

“I wanted our senior leadership team to recognise that, by investing in digital transformation, we could improve time management, greatly enhance internal communications, increase workflow, and streamline so many aspects of our work – from project management, right through to invoicing.”

The programme is delivered in partnership with the North East Combined Authority, and backed by both the UK Government and world-renowned businesses, ensuring SMEs benefit from industry-leading advice and real-world case studies.

The first session of the upcoming cohort begins on 17 September at AV Dawson, followed by workshops on 8 and 22 October. Participating businesses will complete three sessions and gain valuable insight into how digital adoption can unlock growth, efficiency and long-term resilience.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Made Smarter is giving our manufacturers the tools, training and funding they need to adopt modern technologies.

“The success stories speak for themselves – it’s great to see Elemy Group not only adopting new systems, but also rethinking how digital technology can support their growth. We’re a growing digital juggernaut across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.

“And we have a hotbed of local manufacturers who could really benefit from this. I’d urge them to come forward, apply and make the most of our growing strengths – this is a fantastic opportunity to get ahead.”
