GE prepares decom plan for 25MW Arklow 1

GE is to file a planning application to decommission the 25MW Arklow 1 offshore wind farm off east Ireland.

The company is to submit paperwork to An Comisiun Pleanala to take down all seven turbines at Ireland’s first and to-date only offshore wind farm off County Wicklow.

GE wants permission to remove various other elements of the project, including foundations and cables.

It is also to seek the go-ahead to dismantle and remove an onshore substation, according to notices in the local press.

Permission for the works will be sought up to June 2033.

Arklow 1 has been online since 2004, although operations have been largely curtailed in recent years.

One of the seven GE turbines was destroyed in a fire in 2022 while the machines have battled various faults over the years.

SSE Renewables is currently seeking permission for the 800MW Arklow Bank 2 array in the area.
