RWE hits half-way mark on Thor turbines

RWE has installed 36 of the 72 turbines at the 1.1GW Thor offshore wind farm off Denmark’s west coast, reaching the halfway point in turbine installation.

The company said each Siemens Gamesa turbine has a capacity of up to 15MW and that the remaining 36 turbines are scheduled to be installed by the end of 2026, with full commissioning expected by spring 2027.

RWE added that Thor will be the first offshore wind farm to use 36 carbon-reduced steel turbine towers from Siemens Gamesa, while 40 turbines will feature a total of 120 recyclable rotor blades.

When fully operational in 2027, the wind farm will be capable of producing enough electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households.

“With every turbine we install, we move closer to delivering Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm,” said Tobias Keitel, chief technology officer of RWE Offshore Wind.

“Our focus now is on completing the construction work and bringing Thor into full commercial operation by 2027.”

Thor is being developed by RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management, with RWE responsible for construction and operations throughout the project’s lifecycle.
