Subsea innovator SMD hopes to double workforce in next five years

It's been a mainstay of the North East offshore supply chain since its inception in the early 1970s. But since a crash in oil and gas prices in 2015, SMD has been busy diversifying.

Those efforts are now starting to bear fruit, chairman Mike Jones told BusinessLive. Building on a growth plan set out earlier this year, Mr Jones says the firm will now at least double its 180-strong workforce in the next five years as it capitalises on booming renewables.

From its Wallsend base, SMD has engineered an all-electric version of its submersible robots, or ROVs as they are known in the industry. Mr Jones says the new tech will allow wind farm companies, oil and gas firms and scientific teams to operate the vehicles from greater distances and reduce the number of people needed at sea.

In his chat with us this week Mr Jones was keen to portait SMD's work as exciting and groundbreaking as it gears up to hire more people in the North East, and attract those from outside of the region to Tyneside.
