Case Study: A collaborative approach to develop accredited work at height training

The need

Senvion is one of the leading manufacturers of onshore and offshore wind turbines. Based in Edinburgh, Senvion initially used MRS Training & Rescue’s training expertise to deliver in-house training for office and operational staff in disciplines such as Fire Awareness, First Aid and IOSH Managing Safely.

Due to an expansion in wind technician manpower, there was a need to develop and roll-out Senvion bespoke training and rescue procedures in Wind Turbine hub, tower and basement rescue. Having previous experience with MRS, the then Health and Safety manager Gerry Gemmell, approached MRS with a view to us providing the relevant expertise in supporting the development and implementation of these procedures, and then deliver accredited training to Senvion employees.

Making it happen

Having no specific work at height training courses already developed, our Operations Manager, Errol Parrish, began looking for a solution. Initially this involved researching the various standards required for working at height, and then working with our Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) Ronnie Munro, to develop a range of courses. The skills and equipment for working at height are in fact similar in many ways to working in confined spaces, an area we had vast experience and skills already. 

In order to become accredited by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO), we needed the right training facilities and so invested in a 17m work at height tower and associated equipment. Senvion kindly acquired a decommissioned Wind Turbine which was shipped from Germany and installed at our training centre, and we began to offer a range of GWO approved courses.

The long term benefits

Since those early days, our expertise in all aspects of work at height has developed and we are now recognised as a leading provider of training in this area. We also offer advice and consultancy to industry and have recently invested in additional work at height training facilities, not only at Crossgates, but also at three of our other training centres at Knottingley in Yorkshire, Swadlincote in Derbyshire and Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. Ronnie Munro has also written and produced a comprehensive work at height training manual we give to all delegates attending our courses, and we have recently added some new one day courses along with a rescue from height course to our portfolio.

Senvion continue to use MRS for all their work at height and H&S training and we are proud to have been able to provide a robust, scalable solution for their needs.
