Overview of the #MoreRenewablesToday campaign

Although the Government’s Energy Supply Strategy did set out some ambitious new targets for renewables, it didn’t outline one of the most significant decisions Government could make for bill payers in the short term – i.e. how many ‘shovel ready’ wind, solar and tidal energy projects it will unlock investment into in just a few weeks’ time, through its power auctions (CfD Auction Round 4).

Across the UK, there are hundreds of offshore wind, onshore wind, solar and tidal energy sites – which all already have planning permission. Given the low cost of renewables, and the soaring cost of gas, these projects are set to lower everyone’s energy bills. If we had even a fraction of these projects generating electricity for us, we would all have been £100 better off this winter.

Most critically, solar and onshore wind sites can be built faster than any other form of new electricity generation. Shovel ready onshore wind and solar farms could be providing the UK with clean, low cost, domestically produced power as early as next year. What’s more, they’ve providing thousands of jobs, with offshore wind employing 31,000 people across the UK (set to grow to 90,000 by 2030) and onshore wind already Scotland’s biggest low carbon employer.

The #MoreRenewablesToday campaign brings together supportive organisations and MPs to encourage Government to increase the number of renewable energy projects they unlock investment into through latest round of ‘auctions’ for clean power contracts (known as ‘CfD Auction Round 4’) – for billpayers, jobs, investment and the environment.
