The Scottish supply chain is playing a significant role in the construction of the Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm so we are showcasing a number of companies and the part they are playing in the project’s construction.
In the latest of our series Mark Walker, Vice President of DEKRA, based in Westhill, Aberdeenshire, explains how his business is helping the NnG development team to optimise its health and safety culture.
DEKRA is a world class health and safety specialist helping businesses across the globe to reduce operational risk and adopt a culture of care.
Health and safety is paramount importance during the construction of big infrastructure projects like NnG. DEKRA is working closely with our team to integrate existing health and safety skills and cultivate positive attitudes, decision-making and behaviours amongst those working on NnG.
The vision of EDF Renewables UK, joint owner and the developer of NnG, is to be the best in class in health and safety across the renewables industry where Zero Harm is a core value of the business and all harm is seen as preventable.
Mark said: “When we work with an organisation, we want their employees and leaders to tell us about the ‘perfect’ day, and we work out ways so that every day can look like this.
“We continually consider and seek out marginal gains and the aggregation of these gains is the philosophy of searching for a tiny margin of improvement in everything you do. If you broke down all the components of a workday on NnG and improved each of these by a margin, there would be a significant increase when all those components throughout a day are put together.
“Every NnG team meeting will begin with a discussion on the project’s daily safety message. We help to make sure occupational health and safety is constantly considered by the team working on the construction of NnG and at DEKRA we are always looking to enhance and support this already enduring commitment to employees’ health, safety and welfare. “
