zenon Energy Day Durham program: COPA-DATA announces energy event series

COPA-DATA has announced the program for the first of four zenon Energy Day events planned for 2020. The energy software provider has, so far, announced the North of England event, which will be held on Tuesday 10 March in Durham from the headquarters of energy membership association, NOF. Attendees are encouraged to register their interest in advance on the COPA-DATA website.

The zenon Energy Day will investigate current challenges in energy grid communication, commencing with a keynote speech on the IEC 61850 standard delivered by Jurgen Resch, Energy and Infrastructure Industry Manger for COPA-DATA. As the international standard to define communication protocols for substations, IEC 61850 is among the most necessary and beneficial legislations in the energy industry.

During the presentation, Resch will provide a technical overview of IEC 61850, while also explaining how the standard is enabling vast improvements of networking technology on the grid. He will explain IEC 61850 for substation automation, while demonstrating how this standard can be simply understood and implemented by grid workers.

Stuart Mann of cyber security solutions provider, Radiflow, will also provide a presentation to zenon Energy Day attendees. His speech will discuss the importance of maintaining cyber security for industrial control systems (ICS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software. Mann will be joined by Reinhard Mayr, Head of Information Security and Research at COPA-DATA.

Following the focus on cyber security, Thomas Davidson, Control Systems Engineer at IDEC Technical Services will take to the stage to provide a practical case study of deploying control technology on the grid. As a zenon Energy Edition end user, Davidson will explain how the software has been used to tangibly improve grid communications for IDEC.

“COPA-DATA has been successfully hosting its zenon Energy Days for several years,” explained Alan Binning, Regional Manager for the North of the United Kingdom at COPA-DATA. “The increasing popularity of these events has led us to create a series of four regional events for 2020, which will be held in the North of England, Midlands, Wales and Scotland respectively.

“As the United Kingdom increasingly relies on renewable energy sources for power, the industry is experiencing a growing number of challenges — many of which could be solved with a better understanding of energy technologies. At the zenon Energy Day, we examine some of these challenges head on — providing a clear understanding IEC 61850 adherence and providing practical steps to tackling cyber security on the grid.”

Attendees are encouraged to register in advance on the COPA-DATA website: https://go.copadata.com/zenon-energy-day-durham. More information on COPA-DATA and the zenon Energy Edition can also be found online or by contacting your local COPA-DATA branch.
